Cities to Visit: Hillsboro, Texas
Conveniently located on I-35 between Waco and Dallas/Fort
Worth, Hillsboro, one of the original Texas Main Street Cities, offers
an oasis of times gone by for harried travelers. Whether it's history,
water recreation, or shopping that tickles your fancy, there's something
here for everyone.
Points of interest include the Texas Heritage Museum at Hill
College; open Monday through Saturday, 9am to 4pm, and the Hill
County Cell Block Museum, housed downtown in our old county
jail; open Saturdays April through October and by appointment for group
tours. Don't forget to take a trip through the restored Hill
County Courthouse; destroyed by fire on New Year's Day 1993
and returned to glory in 1999.
Dubbed "the antique capital of I-35", we are home to over
100 antique dealers, gift and clothing boutiques, eateries, and bed and
breakfasts. Special times to visit downtown include the 4th Saturday
of every month when merchants host Downtown Days, a
farmers market and trade days. If you come to town any time between the
weekend before Thanksgiving and the New Year holiday, you'll find our
wonderful starlined streets lit up with the holiday spirit, a tradition
started in 1939.
Other points of interest are Prime Outlets at Hillsboro, Lake
Whitney State Park, and Roadrunner Station.
